This publication presents the revised Instructional Designer competencies which were globally validated in 1999. In addition to detailing the competencies and performance statements, the book outlines how the competencies may be used by practicing designers, design managers, academics, and professional consultants. There are also chapters on certification, and how the competencies are used by designers specializing in analysis, evaluation, e-learning and project management.

Instructional Design Competencies: The Standards. (2nd Ed.) (1994). International Board of Standards for Training, Performance and Instruction, Batavia, IL. (Out of Print and no longer available) In this book the original set of core competencies of instructional designers are presented in detail with conditions, behavior and criteria for each of the associated performance statements. The competencies were revised (2000) and a new book published in 2001.

On-line facilitation and teaching is becoming increasingly more important as education and training are delivered on line rather than in the classroom. This article discusses the competencies needed for those involved in on-line facilitation.
